##The Red Shoes (1948 film) is a 1948 British drama film directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, who also wrote the script. It tells the story of a young ballerina (paralysed from the waist down) and her struggle against her domineering mother, who wants to mould her into one of "the world's great dancers" – but only if she dances using pointe shoes, which increase the risk of injury or even death. It stars Moira Shearer as Victoria Page and Marius Goring as Boris Lermontov. It is one of the films that forms the basis of Emeric Pressburger's novel "The Red Shoes", published in 1950. It was the first film issued by the Rank Organisation, an independent production company set up by Pressburger after leaving Eros Films. It also established Powell as a major figure in British cinema, helping to make him a world-famous director. The film follows its own independent narrative, having little to do with the narrative of story within the novel. In fact, the novel opens with a scene from the film, showing Victoria dancing in the ballet.

In 1948, "The Red Shoes" won five Academy Awards: Best Cinematography (Ray Rennahan), Best Art Direction (Emeric Pressburger and Percy Thomas), Best Costume Design (Bryan Dalbey and Cecil Beaton), Best Actress in a Leading Role (Moira Shearer) and Best Original Screenplay for Powell and Pressburger. It was given an additional Oscar at the 28th Academy Awards ceremony, for its musical score by Benjamin Britten.

"The Red Shoes" was released on DVD on 13 February 2002 by MGM Home Entertainment as part of their "Timeless Classics". The DVD features a restored print of the film, with a commentary by all the surviving cast and crew members. It was re-released on DVD in Region 1 on 11 September 2007."The Red Shoes" is also included in the Criterion Collection's "Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger's Vision of Britain Series", released on Blu-ray Disc in Region A on 16 June 2016. The film is presented in the original black-and-white from the 1948 restoration, plus anamorphic widescreen when available. The film has been discussed in the British press at various times in its history. In October 2007, an obituary in "The Observer" described it as a 'classic', but criticised it for being 'conceived in a time when women were not allowed to drink in public places and dance was regarded as a suitable subject only for the hero to die at the end'. In July 2018, "The Daily Telegraph" published a review of Powell's films criticising his films for being too 'dreary' and not enough 'arty'.
